Kim Cuevas began her career with the Washoe County School District (WCSD) in 1994 as an English teacher and speech and debate teacher and coach at Reno High School. After 13 years of teaching many levels of English, coaching the #1 debate team in Northern Nevada, and serving in multiple school leadership roles, Dr. Cuevas took a position in the district offices. In her position as the WCSD 6-12 English Curriculum Coordinator for 15 years, Dr. Cuevas was able to work with teachers from every school, TMCC and UNR to develop a writing-driven curriculum that is used by nearly every secondary school in the district, and teach pre- and in-service teachers as the co-director of the Northern Nevada Writing Project. In 2022, Dr. Cuevas returned to the classroom, where she truly remembered what she loved the most: teaching writing to high students. In the last four years of her 32-years in public education, Dr. Cuevas taught sophomores and juniors at McQueen High School.
Dr. Cuevas has a history of advocating for students in classrooms and teachers at the district level. After losing her spouse to suicide in 2019, she also became an outspoken advocate and trusted confidant for anyone who had experienced traumatic loss.
Kim has lived in Reno since 1989. Outside of her professional life, she loves books, dogs, skiing, and anything that allows her to enjoy the beautiful place we live in. She is the mother of three children who are her favorite people.
